PRESS RELEASE

April 1st, 2011
San Diego, California

In an unprecedented announcement, it came to light today that JAST USA has secured a deal to publish its collection of eroge, visual novels and bishoujo games on the Steam content distribution platform.

“We’re looking forward to the much broader accessibility and eye share exposure on Steam will provide,” said JAST USA and J-List president Peter Payne. “All of the naughty bits will be tastefully hidden, so players of all ages will be able to browse the Steam catalog and see the likes of Stepmother’s Sin and Cosplay Fetish Academy right there next to Dawn of War, Assassin’s Creed, and Portal 2.”

“We thought that titles like Cat Girl Alliance and Come See Me Tonight would fit right in among our portfolio of A-list games,” a Valve spokesman said. “From our perspective, the ability to share these games with a family audience of gamers from the casual to the committed is a win-win. The Visual Novel genre is one we think really has legs in the West and has been underrepresented to this point, and here at Valve we’re always cheering for the underdog.” He paused. “We’ve been assured that’s strictly a metaphor in these games.”

Current plans are for the back catalogs of the original JAST USA, Milky House and Otaku Publishing games from the 1990s to be released first. JAST USA producer and public relations representative Shingo said, “We understand the appeal to gamers of the latest flashy titles, but we also know that fans crave the stability of games developed for systems with under 4MB of RAM. Steam provides the flexibility to deliver these critically small file sizes to almost any Windows PC – it’s a technology we’re really excited to leverage as we dust off the old floppy discs that no one can play anymore.”

Phased release of the vintage JAST USA games portfolio on Steam is scheduled to begin soon. In the mean time, package and download versions of more recent titles are available at the JAST USA online shop.

Maybe you should have been a little less obvious… Right now I don’t know who will fall for this trick.
On the other hand announcing the delay for Demonbane until the next year would have caught many ;-)

The day this would happen…well nothing would be made of it because steam sucks.

not bad…if it were only not so obvious.

I hate the 1st of April. Can’t believe anything that is announced or released.

Whoa. After reading trough this post and that Valve themselves would say that a game like Come See Me Tonight was a A-class title I started wondering.

So yeah, you tricked me with this info thanks to the newsletter. But reading this post makes it a bit harder to believe.

    Nice trick though.

As an April Fools joke, Steam could have announced that they are delaying the release of the last episode of Half Life 2. Oh wait, they’ve already been doing that every year for the past 5 years!!!

Unfortunately, Steam has various things in their Terms of Service that prevent any sort of sexual content.

I’ve always thought Steam should have an adult version of their service, though. They could call it “Sauna”.

After reading this and seeing it in the email, i wasn’t completely sure, but after checking Steam and searching multiple titles (including the ones in the pictures above) I can say that, without a doubt, this is an April fools joke

  16. Posted April 1, 2011 at 1:35 pm | Permalink

So…this is an April’s Fool Day joke right?
If not, then…will eroge really be placed next to games such as L4D and TF2?!
What about parental guidance in browsing of the games?!

I would laugh if it turned out true. Kind of a reverse “April Fools” if you will. Otherwise it’s a little too outlandish to actually believe. Still got a chuckle out of me though. :D

I have to admit I did a double take. I forgot what today was and opened up the Steam browser to check what I should have already known. I… wanted to believe. Well played, Jast USA.

At first I was at doubt but after reading further into the post it sounded too fishy. I would not like my steam friends to be able to see when I’m playing a game like that.

This was pretty funny, but I knew it wasn’t real at first. Plus, it’s April, so I always expect things like this to happen.

However, if this were real, I couldn’t imagine the repercussions…

Maybe it’s a prank, but it might also be a .. probe. If the gaming community responds enthusiastically, that would help persuade Valve in genuine negotiation. If Valves’ customers react badly, then the entire notion can be dismissed as a joke.

Why do you think that steam sucks? Seriously, digital downloads are the way of the future, and I’m so happy that Steam is such a great program and has so many games available for digital download. Not only is their library of games fantastic, but they often have insane sales for games that I normally would not buy, but because of the sale, I would. I love Steam, and I can’t see any reason why someone would think that it “sucks”. I will always pick a digital download over going to the store and buying a copy, for multiple reasons. The first reason is that it is always there. If I lose my CD, or my CD key for a physical copy, I’m screwed. With steam, I don’t need to worry about that one bit. On top of that, like I said, it’s generally cheaper and also they have great deals. It also makes it easy to buy older games that otherwise I would need to order from ebay or amazon for outrageous prices, or even if they’re cheap, I still have to wait for them to arrive and even then they may be scratched, or just not as advertised. Also, it provides a great way for indie developers to get their games in front of a huge market, whereas before there was no way a publisher would take a chance on an indie developer with no prior games.
